Before the First Bell Rings: The Extraordinary Work Behind an Ordinary School Day

For families, the first day of school begins with sharpened pencils, new backpacks, lunch boxes and perhaps a few butterflies. For students, it is a day filled with possibility. Long before the first bell rings, another story has already been unfolding, one that most families never see.

As Board Chair of the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD), I have the privilege of witnessing the remarkable work that happens behind the scenes to make that first day possible. While classrooms may appear ready overnight, the reality is that preparing for a new school year begins months in advance and involves an entire community working together with one shared purpose: helping every child feel welcomed, supported and ready to learn.

Behind every classroom is a team of dedicated people. Teachers thoughtfully prepare learning spaces and lessons that will inspire curiosity. Principals and school staff carefully build class lists, welcome new families and ensure every student has a place to belong. Custodians and maintenance teams work tirelessly to prepare safe, clean and inviting schools. Transportation, technology and administrative staff all play an essential role in making sure the first day runs smoothly. Before a child hangs a backpack on a hook, thousands of acts of care have already taken place.

Some of the important work happens even farther behind the scenes. Trustees spend the year listening to families, meeting with educators and advocating to the government for the resources our students need, not only for today, but for years to come. Those conversations may not happen inside a classroom, but they directly shape what students experience when they walk through the school doors each September.

Effective advocacy has resulted in significant investments in publicly funded Catholic education, including funding for new schools and classrooms, expanded learning spaces, additional teachers and educational assistants and enhanced supports for students with complex learning needs. These investments are far more than numbers in a budget. They represent smaller learning environments, stronger student supports and greater opportunities for every child to succeed (learn more about CCSD’s advocacy work at cssd.ab.ca/advocacy).

Perhaps the most important preparation cannot be measured in dollars or counted in supplies. It is the intentional effort of those involved in the education of a child that makes the difference, and families are indispensable partners in this work. Children flourish when parents, schools and communities work together with trust, open communication and a shared commitment to student success. Whether it is establishing routines at home, encouraging a love of learning, supporting with homework, volunteering at the school or participating in school council, every family has an important role to play. Together, we create the conditions in which students can realize their full potential.

When that first bell rings, it signals more than the beginning of another school year, it celebrates the collective effort of countless people who believe in our children and in the extraordinary future they are capable of creating. Together, we are preparing much more than classrooms. We are preparing possibilities.

The Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) is the largest Catholic school district in Alberta, proudly serving approximately 64,000 students in 120 schools located in Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere and Rocky View County. CCSD educates and empowers students from kindergarten to Grade 12 through its mission of Living and Learning in our Catholic Faith, so that students, centred in Christ, realize their full potential.
