In therapeutic spaces, we are often surrounded by carefully chosen materials. Each comes with intention, purpose, and potential. Therapy toys with pre-set expressions, whether “happy,” “sad,” or somewhere in between, can offer children a way into recognising and naming emotions. They can be containing, familiar, and supportive in different moments of the work.

Alongside these more conventional childhood playthings, something quieter can appear in the use of simple, unmarked peg dolls. Without a defined face or expression, peg dolls do not ask the child to meet them in any particular way. There is no emotion to interpret, and no story already suggested.
