In therapeutic spaces, we are often surrounded by carefully chosen materials. Each comes with intention, purpose, and potential. Therapy toys with pre-set expressions, whether “happy,” “sad,” or somewhere in between, can offer children a way into recognising and naming emotions. They can be containing, familiar, and supportive in different moments of the work.
The Quiet Invitation of the Peg Doll in the Therapy Room
Alongside these more conventional childhood playthings, something quieter can appear in the use of simple, unmarked peg dolls. Without a defined face or expression, peg dolls do not ask the child to meet them in any particular way. There is no emotion to interpret, and no story already suggested. Instead, they offer an open, undecided space. This is a space that can be engaged with, adapted, or left as it is.
In that openness, children may find room to explore at their own pace. Some may choose to draw faces, experimenting with different expressions and shifting a feeling from one state to another. Others may return to the same unmarked figure, perhaps holding something not yet ready to be shaped or named. Sometimes, the peg doll remains blank. That, too, can have meaning.
Peg Dolls Offer Freedom in Simplicity for Therapists
There is no single way these materials are used, and perhaps that is part of their value. As therapists, it can be easy to feel that we need a wide range of resources to support the work; often, these materials do play a key role. But moments like these can gently remind us that not all therapeutic movement comes from what is provided. Sometimes, it is in the absence of definition and in the quiet simplicity of an unmarked peg doll that the child finds the freedom to create, project, or simply be.
Using blank slate figures does not replace other tools. Instead, it sits alongside them, offering a different kind of invitation: one that leaves space for the child to bring their own meaning, in their own time.
In this way, play becomes less about what is presented, and more about what unfolds.
